Rocklin Pipeline Replacement Project
Placer County Water Agency (PCWA) is undertaking a crucial infrastructure project to replace an aging water main along Midas Avenue between 2nd Street and Argonaut Road in the City of Rocklin.
The existing steel pipes, installed in 1963 and coated with cement mortar, are approaching the end of their operational lifespan. A series of leaks and failures on the mainline pipes in recent years has underscored the importance of this project to maintaining the consistent delivery of safe drinking water to Rocklin residents.
Project Scope:
Phase 1 of this project focuses on replacing a significant portion of the mainline pipes along Midas Avenue. The project includes trenching to install a new 12” mainline pipe, service laterals, and meter boxes. After pressurizing the mainline and connecting individual residences, crews will backfill the trench and apply temporary pavement. Final paving and striping will be completed once the entire road section is ready. The project will progress in sections along the route to minimize disruption.
Traffic Impacts:
Motorists should anticipate delays while traveling through the construction zone. Traffic flow will be slower than usual within the construction area. Flaggers will be present to safely control the flow of traffic and assist with pedestrian access.
Water Service Interruptions:
Water delivery to customers is expected to be minimally disrupted, with only brief shutdowns required to connect the new pipes and services to the system. Residents will receive a door tag notification 48 hours in advance of any planned interruptions.
Project Timeline:
Phase 1 will begin in October 2024 and is projected to conclude by Summer 2025.
Background
Originally scheduled to start in August 2023, Phase 1 was delayed due to supply chain issues involving critical components, such as brass fittings and valves. In addition, in light of the significant disruptions caused by the severe storms of 2023, PCWA strategically reconfigured the project timeline to lessen inconveniences for residents. As a result, Phase 2, which focused on the pipeline section between Clover Valley and Argonaut Road, was initiated first and successfully completed in July 2024.
With an estimated cost of $3.1 million for Phase 1, the overall multi-phase project is expected to total $24 million when finished. This investment, funded by PCWA ratepayers and the City of Rocklin, will provide Rocklin with a modern and reliable water infrastructure system that will last for decades.
